Mindset Series – Robert E Lee

It is asserted history is constructed with the victor — that as a direct consequence of conflict, the defeated will often be portrayed as being a collective, detestable mass that follows an equally repulsive value system. Yet, though his Confederate Army what food was in the losing end of America’s Civil War, Robert E. Lee is remembered among the most celebrated generals in American history.

Rational ideas of armed conflict presume that defeated soldiers should be denounced, not exalted; punished, not praised; and despised, not admired. However, Lee is entirely with the latter. What made one man, one soldier, so special that he is remembered by more Americans today than lots of his victorious Union counterparts?

Unfortunately, this can be a question that lots of volumes of books also have trouble answering. And, I think that you have no desire (during this moment, no less than) to read content of these depth and breadth (i admit i cannot write it). Nonetheless, basically needed to describe the reason behind Lee’s appeal in a single word, it could be “motivation.”

I’ll explore this theme in the context of the subsequent quote:

“There is scarcely anything that is appropriate that we cannot hope to accomplish by labor and perseverance. Nevertheless the first must be earnest along with the second unremitting.”
Robert E. Lee

Earnest Labor

Today’s culture is but one where immediacy is glorified — from your Round-the-clock news cycle; to tarts that “pop” before you pour a glass of milk; to magic weight loss suppliments — so that it is possible to forget that anything worth accomplishing takes earnest labor, which I would define being a serious and purposeful exertion of body, mind and spirit.

When businesses speak about pouring their blood, sweat and tears inside their companies, they refer merely to earnest labor.

If the craft of a famous musician or star athlete generally seems to look “easy,” it is made so through earnest labor.

And, when I strive to achieve come about of owning a marathon, I am going to commit to one principle: you got it right, earnest labor.

A chance to learn; the power to improve; as well as the means by which goals are accomplished; are controlled because of your power to strive, and also to do so earnestly — without reservations (or a magic pill).

Unremitting Perseverance

Lee fought a constant battle for much of the Civil War. His outnumbered and poorly-supplied army shrank daily due to desertions by disheartened soldiers. Yet, despite this, he fought vigorously until the moment when defeat was imminent.

How many times will we give up goals when things aren’t proceeding the same manner there was anticipated? Did you choose to quit smoking, however discovered you had an enormous project due at the job, school, or elsewhere? Do you try creating a practice of getting out of bed earlier in the morning, however slept over the following day and decided rrt had been a pointless exercise?

Lee comes with a answer of those, and other, problems: unremitting perseverance, that i would define as being a steady, unshakable persistence in adhering to an option, belief, or purpose.

Once i train for and in the end run the marathon, I am aware that there will be a little voice within my head telling me to avoid; that it hurts excessive to visit to the next level. However, my unremitting perseverance in pursuing the challenge — all the way to the conclusion line — will enable me to concentrate simply to my footsteps from the pavement; the gentle breeze passing over my ears; and also the rhythm of my breathing — thus pushing that little voice in the depths of my subconscious.

Nevertheless, love wins over hate is an ideal example that harboring unremitting perseverance does not ensure victory. In fact, he was defeated in war. Yet, even during momentary failure, perseverance gives you the electricity to obtain back on your metaphorical (or actual) horse and ride into battle (hopefully metaphorical) yet again, pursuing your goal with all the knowledge that may only be learned through setback.

It is said that history is presented by the victor; and, in Lee’s case, it’s. In capturing the hearts of Americans, both through his military actions, his personal value system, and his awesome sincere words of wisdom, Robert E. Lee is clearly victorious.
