The Magical Handshake ~ Perhaps you have Used it? By Faith Faith BBE, CTM, NE

We all know the significance of a great first impression. In only seconds of your meeting, people attain a plethora of information regarding us. They notice our face, hair, clothing, body size, posture, demeanor as well as the sound in our voice. It’s an important time because there is no second possiblity to make a good first impression.

It happens … the handshake.

I once took a communications class with a nearby church. The trainer had 30+ attendees fall into line single file. The instructions were to look him in the eye and shake his hand. I had been confident I knew how to properly shake hands.

After the last person shook the instructor’s hand, he asked, “Tell me that which you considered my handshake. Could it have been an excellent handshake or even a bad handshake?” I liked his handshake. It absolutely was a firm grip like mine. His handshake confirmed if you ask me I knew the best way to shake hands. I said, exactly, “good handshake.”

He then said something which completely required unexpectedly.

He said the main reason everybody liked his handshake was simple. He mirrored ours. When Hand Shake was firm, his was firm. Whether it would be a light touch, his was a light touch. When they used their contrary to know his, his opposite grasped theirs. He was quoted saying this handshake technique creates an immediate good impression and likeability.

Likeability?

Yes. It’s just like the way we feel once we meet a stranger and learn we share the identical name. Or much more conversation having a stranger, we learn we share a mutual friend. We magically like this person. This is why I call it the Magical Handshake.

From this level on, It is best to never, ever, shake another person’s hand. Instead, allow them to shake yours. Mirror what they do. If you’re offered a strong grip, mirror a company grip. If you’re offered a gentle grip, mirror a soft grip. Remember to mirror the shake too. It’s everything about the grip and shake.

The sole exception happens when someone gives you a handshake using their palm facing down. As you shake hands, they have the upper-hand and therefore are responsible. They dominate. This is known as an aggressive handshake.

When offered an aggressive handshake, respond by giving them a Double-Handed handshake with a wee turn. Start by having your palms slightly upwards, grasping their hand with both of yours. Then, straighten their handshake vertically having a wee turn as you’re shaking. This communicates in their mind, “we are equal.”

The very next time you need to create a good first impression, provide the Magical Handshake a go. Do it whenever you park and fly people. It’s a simple, surefire method to improve your likeability factor.
