We all know the importance of an excellent first impression. In barely seconds of your meeting, people attain an array of details about us. They notice our face, hair, clothing, body size, posture, demeanor as well as the sound of our own voice. It’s an important time as there is no second opportunity to produce a good first impression.
Then it happens … the handshake.
I once took a communications class at a nearby church. The teacher had 30+ attendees lineup single file. The instructions would look him within the eye and shake his hand. I used to be confident I knew the best way to properly shake hands.
Following your last person shook the instructor’s hand, he asked, “Tell me that which you seriously considered my handshake. Maybe it was an excellent handshake or even a bad handshake?” I liked his handshake. It had been a strong grip like mine. His handshake confirmed in my experience I knew how to shake hands. I said, like everyone else, “good handshake.”
Then he said a thing that completely involved aback.
He was quoted saying the main reason everybody liked his handshake was simple. He mirrored ours. If the handshake was firm, his was firm. When it was a light touch, his would be a light touch. If they used their opposite to understand his, his opposite grasped theirs. He was quoted saying this handshake technique creates an instantaneous good impression and likeability.
Likeability?
Yes. It’s much like the way you feel once we meet an unfamiliar person and learn we share the same name. Or much more conversation having a stranger, we learn we share a mutual friend. We magically like that person. For this reason I call it the Magical Handshake.
From here on, It is advisable to never, ever, shake another person’s hand. Instead, let them shake yours. Mirror their business. If you’re offered a firm grip, mirror a strong grip. If you’re offered a gentle grip, mirror a gentle grip. Make sure to mirror the shake too. It’s everything about the grip and shake.
The sole exception happens when someone provides you with a handshake making use of their palm facing down. As you shake hands, they’ve the upper-hand and are in control. They dominate. This is whats called a hostile handshake.
When offered an aggressive handshake , respond giving them a Double-Handed handshake having a wee turn. Start insurance firms your palms slightly upwards, grasping their hand with you have. Then, straighten their handshake vertically with a wee turn as you’re shaking. This communicates for them, “we are equal.”
The next time you want to produce a good first impression, supply the Magical Handshake a go. Do it once you park and fly people. It’s a simple, surefire method to boost your likeability factor.
