Band Marketing and promotion – How to Promote Your Band and obtain More Gigs

I was thinking about writing this post on band promotion because I have often heard new bands and struggling musicians wishing they were more paying gigs. Receiving a paying gig is good, I mean… you spend a lot of time, energy and even cash getting your act together.. rehearsing, planing a trip to rehearsals and gigs (gas can be quite a pain in case you travel by car), buying your gear, etc. But earning money gigs for first time acts can be quite difficult.

While I realize its great to get paid, I would not mean to express you should think of a band like a business. Some tips i am saying is, it will be practical to at the very least have your costs covered.

Needless to say, that will be determined by you and the reasons why you are in a band in the first place.

Some bands wish to play; love playing; believe that playing and having their music available is the better compensation there’s… and also the return of their purchase of effort, time and money is always that chance to wake up there and PLAY. In addition there are others who work on a long-term goal like building their own following and having their music across for many years.

Exactly why you’re doing so, basically sums it.

But, in case you wished to get paying gigs, here are some steps you can take.

1. Work on Your product or service

Now and then I come across a client who struggles with promoting their products or services, and set in many effort and then get minimal results. The key reason is, they haven’t yet managed to accurately develop, define and refine their product, which explains why aggressively promoting something mediocre will forever yield mediocre results.

So what is your product or service? This guitar rock band, along with your music. The main element real question is how can you set yourself aside from the rest. What exactly is it you accomplish is exclusive, or what is it you can do better than everyone else?

“What are you wanting visitors to remember and As if you for?”

2. Define Your Music/Repertoire

Repertoire defines which band you might be. What’s more, it defines who your audience is. I really believe writing and recording original materials are great because insurance firms your own music you develop a good point that others do not have. It really is that final sum of a collaborative creative effort that band promotion BUT, does not guarantee success, since for your band to get successfully famous for your own music, you would first need to attract a crowd that gets to know and regards.

For a passing fancy note, as a cover band doesn’t imply you cannot get paying gigs. There are a lot of canopy bands which will get paid well for small bar gigs and even major events.

What it really depends upon could be the novelty in the band, along with your draw. Novelty is always that something about yourself that men and women should come see; along with your draw could be the sized the group it is possible to gather at your gigs.

3. Market Yourself

You would need to sell you to ultimately those who you believe would appreciate your band and just what you have to offer. There are basically two types of people you need to market to; you can find those who you would like arriving at your gigs and appreciating your own music, and also the people who are able to hire you for gigs.

This can be the classic “the chicken or even the egg scenario”, in which you actually expand your audience and get more exposure since they can be playing more gigs, but to get more gigs you got to get invited or hired by people who have support to produce gigs happen.

Nevertheless it don’t have to be complicated. You need to simply do both as well.

Networking is vital. The harder people you get to meet, the greater contacts you determine, the closer you get to your main goal.

4. Management / Representation

You must have a supervisor. A specialist figure whom you trust and count on to dedicate yourself nothing less than the success and well-being in the band.

A supervisor must be a tenacious businessman. He could be a negotiator, understands marketing, and even more importantly he believes within the product he could be entrusted with. His main goal is usually to sustain and develop further the merchandise he manages.

Having a manager may have many perks, and one of the things I see managers being able to do that bands that manage themselves cannot, is be objective. The manager sees something that individual members within a band tend not to see, this is especially true when some individuals this rock band develop egos that cloud their judgment. Members have a tendency to get tunnel vision and may also not respond well with other people’s opinions that won’t be flattering, a supervisor knows if criticisms are valid and take these not emotionally but objectively.

A supervisor is both part of the gang and outsider; an associate because he in concert with the gang to realize their dreams. He could be an outsider who is able to make rational decisions and even be critical in the group when it fails to deliver what their audience expects.

Musicians is often essentially the most stubborn of individuals, and also the least receptive to criticism, plus a trusted opinion from an expert figure can help this rock band try to better the merchandise. Keep in mind that the manager is first and foremost a business person, and the man runs this rock band because it’s “profitable”… the better to promote a band, the greater money it can make, the greater money the manager makes also.

Managers should also be very aggressive and chronic, a pal of mine (a supervisor for the huge act) once said an account about how precisely she approached bar after bar and then get denied whenever and was given a number of reasons and excuses. She never threw in the towel, and did not give up her band… today that band can be a major recording artist… and actually they’ve been big for a while now.
